Barney Evans

Barney graduated from the Sports Businesses and Entrepreneurship degree in 2021.

The course was extremely well matched for me, thanks to its proactive and entrepreneurial edge. No tests, no exams, what you put in you get out, and an all-round great degree that has set me up perfectly for 'the real world'.

There wasn't a specific job that I was targeting when I looked at going to university, so this course allowed me to dive into every aspect of business and discover what I liked, what I didn't, what I was good at and what I wasn't so good at.

Since graduating with a 2.1, I quickly moved into a Business Development Manager role at Cardiff Rugby. This role was an incredible launch pad for my career, selling match-day hospitality and advertising across the ground, and putting on events for the club and Welsh Rugby allowed me to build an abundance of connections.

I was then approached about joining Gaucho, an Argentinian Steak Restaurant that was expanding into Cardiff after great success in London and across the UK. Again, as a Business Development Manager, this allowed me to expand my skills into hospitality within fine dining experiences and selling a venue. There was also a very large sporting partnership arm to the role, which helped attract the locals and businesses across Wales.

I have enjoyed both jobs for different reasons, and the successes I have achieved in both, I believe have come from the SBE degree. It helped me discover and develop my skills and it taught me the realities of business.

I would recommend it to anyone in a similar position.
