About the modules

Inspired by the pioneering Finnish ‘Team Academy’ approach, the Sports Business & Entrepreneurship degree programme is a practical, hands-on approach to learning. Progress is developed through a mix of continuous assessment and individual assignments spread across four strands.

Team Company

  • Running a Learning Organisation (RaLO)

  • This is where you learn how to work effectively within a team.

Together, you’ll set your team strategy and goals, run weekly training sessions and organise projects and events. You’ll learn how to manage conflict and give and receive constructive feedback, and you will provide accountability to each other to ensure everyone plays an effective role.

  • There is one assignment in the Team Company strand, that is assessed at four points throughout the academic year.

Leading Thoughts: At the beginning of each year (October), you will set your strategy as a team, identifying team goals and objectives, and setting out your key milestones to ensure you are achieving them. As well as creating a formal report, you will share your strategy with the Sports Business & Entrepreneurship community in a professional business presentation style.

Where Are You At: At two points in the year (December and March), you will share the progress you have made with the wider Sports Business & Entrepreneurship community. This may be in the form of a formal presentation, video or business conference.

Annual Report: You will wrap up the academic year in May by reflecting on the progress you have made as a team and identifying development opportunities for the following year. This is shared as a formal report and a business presentation to the Sports Business & Entrepreneurship community.

Each assessment is marked as a team assessment with the ability to influence grades based on individual input and engagement.

Self Leadership

  • Managing My Learning & Development (MMLaD)

  • The purpose of Self-Leadership is to intentionally influence your thinking, feelings and actions toward achieving your goals. It is about taking ownership of your choices and behaviours, developing an enterprising and entrepreneurial mindset and being able to manage and motivate yourself in an appropriate and effective manner.

  • There are two assignments in the Self-Leadership strand.

Learning Contract: This is a continuous assessment with two marking points. Through prompted questions, you will reflect on your journey so far, identify your future ambitions and set out goals and milestones to help you monitor progress and submit this as your Initial Learning Contract in October. In May, you will submit your Final Learning Contract, where you reflect on the progress and development, ready to jump back in for your next academic year.

Self-Leadership essay: This is an academic essay where you explore self-leadership theories and concepts, and apply these to your own experiences.

Learning by Doing

  • Enterprise & Entrepreneurial Practice (EEP)

  • The purpose of this strand is to learn from your experiences through action and reflection. You will engage in core programme activities and create entrepreneurial projects and ventures of your own, both individually and with others on the programme. You will then be encouraged to reflect on the successes and learnings, to direct your next steps.

  • There are two assignments in the Learning by Doing strand.

Portfolio of Practice: Your portfolio is where you evidence and reflect on your activities. You will plan and review each month against your goals, gather feedback from your Team Company and others, and refine throughout the year to ensure you are making progress and are still heading in the right direction. This is assessed in December and May.

Learning by Doing essay: This is an academic essay where you reflect on your Learning by Doing activities and identify plans for further development. As part of the assignment, you will present a summary of your reflections and learnings to your Team Company.

Learning from Others

  • Enquiry into Enterprise & Entrepreneurship (EiEaE)

  • This is where you explore and apply models, frameworks, theories and methodologies that have been developed within the discipline of enterprise and entrepreneurship.

This enquiry may include learning through reading, workshops, learning sets and through direct engagement with your peers, mentors and experienced entrepreneurs.

  • There are two assignments in the Learning from Others strand.

Portfolio of Practice: Your portfolio is where you evidence and reflect on your activities. You will plan your Learning from Others activities to help you develop the skills and competencies to meet your goals, and you will review progress each month, gathering feedback from your Team Company and others, and refine throughout the year. This is assessed in December and May.

Assessed Training Session: You will be required to research and deliver a training session to your Team Company on a topic of your choice. This will involve identifying a topic that is relevant and valuable to you and the team, researching theories, models and concepts to enable to you to understand and deliver an engaging and interactive training session to share the knowledge.

“This course reframes failure as a valuable learning experience. Each setback has been an opportunity to develop my reflective skills and analyse why a particular plan didn’t succeed.”

— Charles Lovell, Sports Business & Entrepreneurship Graduate

What will you get involved in?

As well as starting your own individual and team projects and ventures, we provide a number of programme-led activities.

Forest & Back

Forest & Back is the first programme-led activity after your induction to first year. It includes an overnight stay and activities designed to help you get to know each other, and it is the first challenge you’ll undertake in your Team Company.

It’s lots of fun and is a chance to step outside of your comfort zone and see what you are capable of.

Client Project

Each year, you will work on a Client Project with one of the Bristol Sport businesses. In year 1 you will work with Bristol Flyers basketball, year 2 will be with Bristol Bears and year 3 with Bristol City.

It’s an exciting part of the programme where you have the opportunity to get involved in providing a real solution to a real problem or opportunity. It’s also a great way to build your network and make connections within the different sports businesses.

Learning Journey

Each year, you will go on a Learning Journey with your Team Company. The purpose of a learning journey is to explore how other people learn, and bring back ideas and insights to enhance your experience. You will plan the journey yourselves, identifying which Team Academy programme you want to visit (this may be in the UK, or it could be one of the 20+ academies in 16 countries around the world) and liaising with them to agree what you will do when you get there.

New environments bring new challenges for growth: these learning journeys always challenge me to see things differently and adapt. It reinforces for me the importance of always being open minded and curious.”
— Neve Platt, SBE alumni & Bristol City Women’s Academy Operations Manager

Charity Challenge

At the beginning of each year you will take part in Charity Challenge. We invite a local charity in to brief you on their focus and what support you need.

You’re put into teams mixed across year groups and you have just three days to raise as much money as possible. It’s a great opportunity to develop your creative thinking and entrepreneurial skills alongside getting to know the rest of the SBE community and of course, raising money for deserving causes.

“It was an absolute delight to witness the degree of enthusiasm shown by the students in undertaking their mammoth fundraising task for Friends of Rwandan Rugby. In just 48 hours, the novel and inventive fundraising ideas were fascinating and the amount of money raised was incredible.”
— Tina Cumberlidge, Friends of Rwandan Rugby

Work Shadowing

With access to the Bristol Sport group businesses and our wider network, there are regular opportunities to shadow and gain experience in a wide range of industries and roles. We’ve seen Team Entrepreneurs get involved in planning supporter experience for matchdays, support a creative agency on client photoshoots and deliver football sessions with the Robins Foundation youth engagement team.

“James went behind the scenes on multiple video shoots for a range of our sports clients and showed real professionalism, enthusiasm and a strong work-ethic throughout, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a fast-paced production environment.”
— Liz Prior, Creative Lead, Feverpitch
